How to Prepare Artwork for a Laser Engraver or CNC Router
Turning a photo or logo into a clean, cut-ready SVG/DXF file.
Laser engravers, CNC routers, and vinyl cutters don't work with photos or PNGs — they follow vector
paths, moving the tool head (or beam) along the exact lines a file describes. That's what a DXF file
is: a standard vector format built specifically for that kind of machine, and it's usually generated
from an SVG that's already been cleaned up for cutting.
What makes artwork "cut-ready"

Clean, closed shapes. A machine needs unambiguous paths to follow — stray pixels,
soft anti-aliased edges, or gaps in a line all become problems once they're converted to vector
paths a machine has to physically trace.

Enough contrast. Tracing works by finding boundaries between light and dark (or
between colors), so a subject with a clear silhouette against its background produces far cleaner
paths than a low-contrast image.

The right level of detail. A machine will faithfully attempt to cut every path in
the file, including small imperfections that got traced along with everything else — simpler
source images with intentional lines produce more reliable results than complex, noisy photos.
From photo or logo to DXF

continuous lines rather than broken or noisy ones.
